Youth Microcredit International Engages WPO and YPO Youth in Microlending, Visits Guatemala

PAN has created a model program to engage WPO and YPO youth in making a difference through microlending.  Within WPO and YPO there is a great opportunity to create networks of youths, who are focused on becoming microlending ambassadors by creating programs in their schools or communities.  Imagine partnerships being developed all over the world around youth microcredit initiatives.

WPO and YPO Youth with microcredit loan recipients in Jaibalito Village, Guatemala

High school students create microcredit clubs at their schools.  These clubs raise money, educate people about microcredit, develop examples of how microcredit makes a difference, and disseminate that information throughout the school and community.  Youth learn about lending and credit while becoming aware of the challenges of the poor.  They will also develop an understanding of how market economies work and the values and customs of different cultures.  Facilitating exports or promoting better business practices can complement microcredit, and students may import and sell artisan products in their schools and/or through an e-commerce craft store.

There was a site visit to Guatemala 17-21 March 2006 to visit microcredit sites.  The group collaborated with HELPS on a program related to the Onil stove.  These stoves burn significantly more efficiently, with less fuel, no smoke in the homes, and a cleaner environment.  The group is working with Genesis Empesarial enabling people to borrow money and pay the loan back quickly with the savings on the wood.  Participants visited 10 families and assisted them by installing a stove.  They also identified products to import.

YPO Social Enterprise Networks Summit 29 November to 1 December 2006 in Boston -- Please Register!

We invite you to participate in the 2006 YPO Social Enterprise Networks Summit, a two-day program taking place in Boston starting with dinner 29 November through 1 December 2006.

Any YPO member, spouse and/or Alumni who is a member of one of the Social Enterprise Networks or is interested in getting involved is encouraged to attend. The Social Enterprise Networks include: Economic Development Network, Education Network, Environment Network, Health Network and Peace Action Network. Note that within YPO, Peace Action Network (PAN) is now one of the Social Enterprise Networks.

This will be an excellent chance for you to learn more about the Social Enterprise Networks initiative and how you can get involved.  Current and future champions of these Networks (including PAN) will be able to share ideas and best practices—learning from each other what has worked, and what hasn’t.  We’ll hear from YPO leaders about the vision for Social Enterprise Networks and how they’re poised to greatly enhance the YPO member experience; we’ll hear from YPO staff about how to really “get things done”; and we’ll hear tangible yet inspiring strategies from leading thinkers like Tom Tierney, the former head of Bain and now the Chairman of BridgeSpan and BridgeStar.  Most of all, we’ll have the chance to put our heads together, form bonds, and plot a path for how to make the Social Enterprise Networks initiative even stronger and more vibrant.  Please be a part of this important and monumental event

To register
for the Social Enterprise Networks Summit, please contact Ken Tsunoda at ktsunoda@pannetwork.org or +1.408.353.9042.  Please click here for a copy of the registration form.

We do hope that you will be able to join us, and we look forward to seeing you in Boston.

Sincerely yours,

Elizabeth Funk (YPO Barbary Coast N. Ca)

Corporate Social Responsibility - Champion Mark Van Ness Organizes September 6 Global Conference Call with IBM; Seeks Members for New Action Forum

Mark Van Ness (YPO Southern California) has officially launched an Action Forum on Social Responsibility with two Global Conference Calls.

The first Global Conference Call took place on June 27 titled "Adding Sense & Cents to Your Business: The Opportunity of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)."  The objective of the call was to hear from leaders on why CSR is core to business; to learn what defines good CSR; to analyze the business case for CSR; and to understand the requirements of senior executive leadership for CSR.  Two speakers who live and breathe corporate social responsibility on a daily basis shared their experiences on the call:  YPOer Mark Van Ness and Steve Rochlin of Boston College’s The Center for Corporate Citizenship.  To listen to an archive of this call online and view accompanying slides, click on: http://viavid.net/dce.aspx?sid=00003096.

The next Global Conference Call on Social Responsibility will take place on September 6 at 10am CDT titled "IBM's Success with Innovation and Corporate Social Responsibility:  Quantifying Return on Investment of CSR."   Two senior executives at IBM will share their perspectives on the relationship between technology and corporate citizenship, and the role of innovation in both areas:  Nicholas M. Donofrio, Executive Vice President, Innovation and Technology, and Stanley S. Litow, president of the IBM International Foundation and vice president of Corporate Community Relations.  Following their presentation, call participants will discuss future plans for the Social Responsibility Action Forum.

Children's Health Forum in Developing Countries Organizes September 14 Global Conference Call; Plans Second Meeting in Boston November 1-3

Eleven million children under the age of 5 die every year from causes that could be prevented by existing therapeutic and preventive strategies.  The loss of children due to avoidable or treatable conditions is needless and horrific.

Children’s Health Forum in Developing Countries is comprised of YPO/WPOers and/or their spouses who are actively involved in hands-on philanthropic efforts on children’s health issues ranging from: preventing the transmission of the AIDS virus from pregnant woman to her unborn child in Africa to distribution of folic acid to prevent birth defects in South America.   The Forum also includes members/spouses who want to have an impact in improving children’s health, but have not determined how.

On September 14 at 8am PDT, Children’s Health Forum in Developing Countries and YPO Health Network will host a one-hour Global Conference Call with Stephen Tomlin, international health program specialist for International Medical Corps, to discuss the impact of integrated community development on the health of women and their children in Nairobi’s Kibera – Africa’s largest urban slum.  You are welcome to participate – click here for more information about the call.

The next meeting of Children's Health Forum in Developing Countries will take place in Boston November 1 - 3.  If you are interested in participating in this forum, please contact Linda Benge at ltbenge@yahoo.com
