Youth Microcredit International Engages WPO and YPO Youth in Microlending, Visits Guatemala
PAN has created a model program to engage WPO and YPO youth in making a difference through microlending. Within WPO
and YPO there is a great opportunity to create networks of youths,
who are focused on becoming microlending ambassadors by creating
programs in their schools or communities. Imagine partnerships
being developed all over the world around youth microcredit
initiatives.

WPO and YPO Youth with microcredit loan recipients in
Jaibalito Village, Guatemala
High school students create microcredit clubs at their schools.
These clubs raise money, educate people about microcredit, develop
examples of how microcredit makes a difference, and disseminate that
information throughout the school and community. Youth learn about
lending and credit while becoming aware of the challenges of the
poor. They will also develop an understanding of how market
economies work and the values and customs of different cultures.
Facilitating exports or promoting better business practices can
complement microcredit, and students may import and sell artisan
products in their schools and/or through an e-commerce craft store.

There was a site visit to Guatemala 17-21 March 2006 to visit
microcredit sites. The group collaborated with HELPS on a program
related to the Onil stove. These stoves burn significantly more
efficiently, with less fuel, no smoke in the homes, and a cleaner
environment. The group is working with Genesis Empesarial enabling
people to borrow money and pay the loan back quickly with the
savings on the wood. Participants visited 10 families and assisted
them by installing a stove. They also identified products to
import.

September 14 Global Conference Call; Plans Second Meeting in
Boston November 1-3
Eleven
million children under the age of 5 die every year from

philanthropic efforts on children’s health issues ranging
from: preventing the transmission of the AIDS virus from
pregnant woman to her unborn child in Africa to distribution
of folic acid to prevent birth defects in South America.
The Forum also includes members/spouses who want to have an
impact in improving children’s health, but have not
determined how.
On September
14 at 8am PDT, Children’s Health Forum in Developing
Countries and YPO Health Network will host a one-hour Global
Conference Call with Stephen Tomlin, international health
program specialist for International Medical
Corps, to discuss the impact of integrated community
development on the health of women and their children in
Nairobi’s Kibera – Africa’s largest urban slum. You are
