Village Partnership Action Forum Focuses on Sustainable Development

The Village Partnership Action Forum aims to develop business approaches to help build sustainable development in under-developed countries, with the power of WPO and YPO members' connections and expertise as business leaders.

The Forum is in its exciting early days. "We are a new forum, not yet fully formed," says co-founder Frieder Krups (Presidents' Action Network). "We are at that stage in life where we want to give back, and our interests lie in third-world development. Our personal objectives, skill sets and willingness to commit time and resources are quite varied, however. In the last nine months, we have developed a number of interesting ideas on how to apply business thinking to development issues. Now our greatest challenge is to see how we can support each other in implementing these concepts and achieving synergies."

Reaching Around the World Village Partnership Action Forum had its first meeting in Bosnia last spring. Members teamed up with Farmers Helping Farmers to get a first-hand impression of the challenges of "integrated village development." In Srebrenica, Bosnia, members of the Forum saw villages in different states of development, as well as one area needing complete rebuilding. After meeting with government officials, NGOs and local villagers, a couple of the members helped one community create a joint action plan that has enabled the villagers in taking their first important steps towards sustained development.

In a neighboring continent, four members of the Action Forum visited India last August. The aim of their visit was to learn how to replicate the success of the Hand-in-Hand organization, which has created an impressive 100,000 jobs in just two years. Frieder Krups continued on to Pakistan to the earthquake region, where TCF, a leading NGO led by WPOer Ahsan Saleem (Pakistan), guided him through villages where he learned about the challenges involved in creating earthquake-proof housing for local communities, rebuilding the infrastructure and reigniting the local economy following the devastating earthquake of October 2005.

Social Enterprise Networks Champions Summit 29 November to 1 December 2006 in Boston -- Please Register!

We invite you to participate in the 2006 Social Enterprise Networks Champions Summit, a two-day program taking place in Boston starting with dinner 29 November through 1 December 2006

Any YPO or WPO member, spouse and/or Alumni who is a member of one of the Social Enterprise Networks or is interested in getting involved is encouraged to attend. The Social Enterprise Networks include: Economic Development Network, Education Network, Environment Network, Health Network and Peace Action Network. Note that within YPO, Peace Action Network (PAN) is now one of the Social Enterprise Networks.

This will be an excellent chance for you to learn more about the Social Enterprise Networks initiative and how you can get involved.  Current and future champions of these Networks (including PAN) will be able to share ideas and best practices—learning from each other what has worked, and what hasn’t.  We’ll hear tangible yet inspiring strategies from leading thinkers like Tom Tierney, the former head of Bain and now the Chairman of BridgeSpan and BridgeStar.  Most of all, we’ll have the chance to put our heads together, form bonds, and plot a path for how to make the Social Enterprise Networks initiative even stronger and more vibrant.  Please be a part of this important and monumental event

Environment Network Charts Course at Global Warming Summit and Expands Membership

The Environment Network had a successful meeting-in-meeting on 12 October 2006 in conjunction with the Global Warming Summit, a joint chapter meeting of five Northern California WPO and YPO chapters.

Environment Network champions – including Robert Sherriff (Hong Kong), Network Chair; Bruce Hicks (Hong Kong), Network Education Chair; and Rob Alley (Southern 7), Network member – gathered to brainstorm and plan the network's strategy and way forward. Robert Sherriff presented the Environment Network to the Global Warming Summit participants, many of whom signed up as network members. Projects being discussed include a series of global conference calls focused on climate change and renewable energy, and a program to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of WPO and YPO companies.

The Environment Network pools knowledge, resources and contacts to achieve true progress through action Forums. These groups will coalesce around particular environmental issues and green-business initiatives and combine creative brain power, purchasing power, marketing and investment resources. Their aim is to jumpstart changes now that positively impact our global environment and leave a better world for future generations. Some Forums may decide to take on specific projects, while others may focus on a common concern that can be addressed by each individual through his or her own charitable efforts. Imagine the impact you could have on the world's environmental problems by helping the Network provide real-world examples that "green business is good business" and that it is actually possible to make more profit from doing the "right thing."

Please contact Robert Sherriff (YPO Hong Kong), Chair, at robert.sherriff@item.com.hk if you have any questions.

Education for the Disadvantaged (ED) Forum Meets in Boston, Visits High Performing Charter Schools and Innovative Programs

The Education Network's ED Forum recently had a significant educational experience of its own. The Education for the Disadvantaged Forum (ED Forum) convened in Boston, Massachusetts in early October 2006 for its second official meeting. The discussions were held in a Forum-style environment and resulted in action plans for the group's future endeavors. Members of the Forum visited the MATCH Charter High School and the Roxbury Prep Charter Middle School (http://www.roxburyprep.org) to learn how both schools are exceeding the standards. They have each achieved high-performance results through innovative, extraordinarily intensive programs and great leadership. The schools have a significantly strong culture with discipline and respect shared by teachers and students.

The Forum also had discussions with the Boston Learning Center (BLC) (http://www.bostonlearningcenter.org) and the Education Development Center, Inc. (http://www.edc.org). BLC is a nonprofit, community-based organization dedicated to helping students excel in school. Modeled after the renowned Harvard Literacy Laboratory at Harvard's Graduate School of Education, BLC shared its "secret sauce" to success: the BIFF Paradigm Project. This project motivates economically disadvantaged youth, typically those most at risk of academic failure, to achieve Honor Roll success.

EDC – a private voluntary organization – has been a pioneer, bridging the worlds of research, policy and practice. Developed in collaboration with partners around the globe, EDC's programs and products consistently advance learning and healthy development for individuals of all ages and institutions of all types. EDC manages projects in more than 50 countries globally.

Members of the ED Forum believe that investment in education has some of the highest returns of any philanthropic endeavor.

If you are interested in the ED Forum, in tackling education-related issues in your community or in creating your own education-related Action Forum, please contact Mohnish Pabrai (YPO California Southwest) at mpabrai@pabraifunds.com.

Clinton Global Initiative -- PAN Members Meet With Global Leaders at CGI Meeting in New York

PAN members hosted a meeting-in-meeting at the Clinton Global Initiative 2006 Annual Meeting on 20 September at the Sheraton Hotel in New York City, New York. Hosted by Elizabeth Funk (YPO Barbary Coast), Steven Funk (Northern California, PAN), Jim Hornthal (PAN), Bobby Sager (New England, PAN), Nancy Aossey (YPO Bel Air) and Dick Simon (New England, PAN), the event was attended by 40 WPO and YPO members committed to finding ways to making a difference on global issues.

Abdul-Malik al Jaber (YPO Palestine), Bobby Sager and Jim Hornthal committed to start a Palestinian-Israeli Venture Capital Fund for early stage IT companies that would be funded by investors from both sides of the conflict, creating jobs and servicing markets without distinction of borders and nationalities. Discussions were also held with Ashoka on a possible joint effort to promote social entrepreneurship, championed by Jim Greenbaum (YPO Coastal San Diego), and with the World Bank's Grassroots Business Initiative on a possible alliance with the YPO Social Enterprise Networks.

About Social Responsibility Network

Social Responsibility Network’s objectives will be to provide value in the following areas:

Learning – Education about Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Enterprise, Effective Philanthropy and Socially Responsible Investing.  This learning takes the form of Global Conference Calls, seminars with thought leaders in the field, Forum meetings where members share best practices and learn from each other, meetings-in-meetings at relevant events, and online resources and tools.

Peer-to-peer Support -- Members support each other in their own individual Social Responsibility-related initiatives. Members help each other through sharing, advice, brainstorming and contacts/resources.

Projects that Leverage the Network -- Action Forums work together on "forum projects" -- projects where a handful of members agree to work together, championed by one or two forum members, ideally leveraging the uniqueness of the network of its WPO and YPO members.
