PAN Launches 10 New Action Forums and Initiatives in 2006

Dear PAN Members and Friends,

We have some great news to report as we move into PAN’s next fiscal year starting July 2006.

2006 has been a very active year for PAN. The PAN Champions Meeting that took place in London in January was very productive. The 35 WPOers and YPOers in attendance spent two days focused on new PAN Action Forums and Initiatives.

PAN Champions meet in London January 2006

As a result of their efforts, 10 new Action Forums and Initiatives have been launched, with four new Action Forums having their first meetings during the last few months: Education for the Disadvantaged Forum, JEMS of New York Forum, Children’s Health Forum in Developing Countries, and Village Partnership Action Forum.

Other new Action Forums and Initiatives that have been launched include: Corporate Social Responsibility Forum, Youth Microcredit International, Environment Forum, Israel-Palestine Forum, Disaster Relief Forum and a Joint Nations Project in the Mediterranean and Middle East.

These 10 new Action Forums and Initiatives, along with the nine Action Forums that had been launched in previous years, have generated tremendous momentum for PAN.

PAN has received great support from WPO International in 2006. At the Chapter Leadership Conference in March, PAN received much recognition and positive feedback from WPO leaders. PAN was prominently featured in WPO’s most recent annual report, another indication of WPO’s strong support of PAN members’ efforts to make the world a better place and to change members’ lives.

Within WPO, PAN is structured as a Chapter, the WPO Presidents’ Action Network Chapter. WPO PAN Chapter members can participate in the full range of PAN activities, including all its Action Forums and Initiatives.

We look forward to building on this momentum and increased support in 2006-2007. Thank you so much for all you have done as PAN members to make a difference in the world and to change peoples’ lives.

Village Partnership Action Forum Partners with Villages on Sustainable Development

Taking advantage of YPO’s and WPO’s reputation and its vast network of contacts and resources, the Village Partnership Action Forum works in cooperation with the world’s most professional NGO’s and top experts to create scaleable frameworks for sustainable community development in the developing world.

We are “hands-on,” proving and optimizing our concepts and ideas in pilot villages all over the world. If you want to experience the feeling of moving a community from despair to hope, of reigniting the sparkle of life in the eyes of children and grown-ups alike and if you would like to share this experience with your spouse and your family, consider joining our action forum!

The group has had three highly successful conference calls (click here) on Bosnia, India and Pakistan, and a Forum visit to Bosnia (click here).  To see a slideshow on the Village Partnership Action Forum click here,

Village Partnership Action Forum Plans India/Pakistan Trip for August 16-24

Frieder Krups and the Village Partnership Action Forum have arranged a trip to India and Pakistan from 16 - 24 August 2006 to see Percy Barnevik’s Hand-in-Hand organization in action in the Tamil Nadu province of India, and to visit the earthquake hit region in Pakistan.

India - Learning from Percy Barnevik’s Hand-in-Hand organization

The goal of the Indian leg of the trip will be to get a first-hand impression of Hand-in-Hand, an organization which has created a large number of jobs there (100,000) in a very short time (2 years). Our goal is to find out why Hand-in-Hand has been so extraordinarily effective and what it might take for groups of inspired YPO/WPOers to duplicate this program in another part of the world. Bangalore YPOers Apparao and Latha Mallavarapu, active supporters of the Village Partnership Forum, will be our hosts in India.

Pakistan - Visit to the Earthquake Hit Region

The goal of the visit to the earthquake hit area of Pakistan, is to learn about the challenges involved in creating earthquake-proof housing for local communities, rebuilding the infrastructure (water, electricity, communication, schools, medical centers), and reigniting the local economy. TCF, a leading Pakistani NGO led by WPOer Ahsan Saleem, will guide us through some of the villages where they are active, relate their experience and challenges to us, and connect us to a couple of villages to potentially partner with.  YPOer Amin Hashwani, co-founder of PAN, and his cousin Abid Shaban, will act as our hosts in Pakistan.

Wish To Participate?

If you would like to participate in the India/Pakistan trip, or if you just would like to hear more, please contact Frieder Krups at f.krups@jnet.dk.

Village Partnership Action Forum Visits Bosnia to Plan Collaboration on Rebuilding Villages

Village Partnership Action Forum had its first meeting in Bosnia May 24-28.  The group teamed up with Doraja Eberle from Bauern Helfen Bauern (Farmers Helping Formers) to get a first-hand impression of the challenges of “holistic village development”. Doraja’s organization has been successfully rebuilding villages in Bosnia for the past five years.

The group visited Srebrenica and saw several villages in different stages of development, as well as some candidate areas for rebuilding.  They met with government officials  and had a forum meeting in Sarajevo.  The agenda of the forum meeting included discussing what the group wants to do in Bosnia or elsewhere and defining how it will operate, agreeing on level of commitment, agreeing/defining individual roles and planning the next Action Forum meeting.

As a result of this visit, two forum members returned to Bosnia for a week to gather more detailed information. They interviewed the villagers in two small villages in detail about their skills and education, their present activities to make a living, their ideas for the future and the resources required.  They also had talks with a large number of local microcredit organizations, international and local NGOs, government agencies and municipal officials.  Based on these discussions, the group has created a joint action plan with the villagers. A detailed report on the planned activities in Bosnia will follow in the next newsletter

AAA Forum Meets with Religious Leaders, Develops Action Plan

In January 2006 in London, AAA Forum hosted a small, influential group of mainstream, open-minded religious leaders from the US and Arab countries to discuss key areas of mutual misunderstandings and common ground.  Eight prominent religious leaders and 14 YPO and WPO members attended this very productive event.  It was a unique opportunity for the participants to increase insight into the region and better inform individual actions.  The gathering also catalyzed several strong and measurable actions.  By bringing together thoughtful and influential religious and business leaders, participants strengthened their own personal mutual understandings.  In addition, insights and understandings gained have been shared with the participants' various spheres of influence, including the thousands of members of various mosques, churches and synagogues represented in the forum.  By facilitating meaningful personal connections, the meeting fostered future partnerships among congregations.

Children's Health Forum in Developing Countries Kicks Off with Successful May Meeting in Dallas; Plans Second Meeting in November

In May 2006, PAN launched an Action Forum focused on children’s health issues in the   developing world.  The Forum is comprised of YPO/WPOers who are actively involved in hands-on philanthropic efforts on children’s health issues ranging from: preventing the transmission of the AIDS virus from pregnant woman to her unborn child in Africa to distribution of folic acid to prevent birth defects in South America.

The group's objectives include:

  • To serve as a focal point within YPO and WPO for ideas, support, resources and action related to children’s health issues in the developing world;

  • To help each other with our own initiatives related to children’s health issues through sharing, advice, brainstorming and contacts/resources;

  • To tackle a few projects together as an Action Forum in ways that leverage the uniqueness of the YPO/WPO network.

The next meeting of Children's Health Forum in Developing Countries will take place November 1 - 3.  The meeting location will be announced.  If you are interested in participating in this forum, please contact Linda Benge at ltbenge@yahoo.com
