Children's Health Forum Visits Kenya, Meets with Organizations in Kibera
The Children’s
Health Forum in Developing Countries recently returned from Nairobi,
Kenya where members visited with several organizations and the people
they serve. Please
click here for a copy of their trip report.

Four days were
dedicated to Kibera, a slum where half of Nairobi’s population lives
within one square mile. There is no sanitation or municipal water,
rubbish piles are everywhere, and one-room shacks are the only homes.
The members saw first-hand why over 400 children die in Kenya every day
from diseases that are preventable, treatable or curable.

Personnel from
the International Medical Corps introduced the Forum members to some of
the Kenyans, giving faces and hearts to their stories. They met women
and children living with AIDS, witnessing how the disease results in
hundreds of orphans and abandoned children. They saw wide-spread
malnutrition, poverty, hunger, and other obstacles to education and
livelihood. They also met people who are working with almost no
resources to help their fellow Kenyans live better lives. The stories
were both heartbreaking and uplifting.

"What we have
learned is that there are no silver bullets, only silver buckshot,” said
Linda Benge, WPO Austin. “As YPOers, Alumni, WPOers and family, we want
to roll up our sleeves and make something happen. We can use our
resources to start dialogues with corporate partners. We need
partnerships for supplemental baby formula and bed nets, markets for
sustainable products made by Kenyans, money for programs, and much more.
We need your help. We would be happy to share our experiences with you.”
If you would
like to join the group or learn more, please contact Linda Benge (ltbenge@yahoo.com).

Parent-Child Social Action in Guatemala, 30 June to 7 July 2007 -
Register Now!

A year ago Stephanie Sonnabend (WPO New England) and her family traveled
with a small group of WPOers and YPOers to Guatemala to learn about
microfinance and begin to understand how they might make a difference. “It
was truly one of the most meaningful and memorable trips for our family,”
says Stephanie. “We were visiting micro entrepreneurs, hearing their stories
and discovering how very small loans of $200 to $2000 could transform their
lives. We saw how small loans could help parents send their children to
school and put a concrete floor into their dirt houses. We saw how a stove
that costs $125 to install could prevent respiratory ailments and burns in
families, save them money in firewood, cut cooking time in half and improve
the environment.”
This summer (30 June to 7 July 2007) Stephanie and her son Nick Ciccolo
are leading a group of high school youth and their parents to not only learn
and observe, but actually make a difference. In partnership with HELPS
International, they will be installing stoves in a village. In typical WPO/YPO
fashion, they will be making great connections with other families and
having fun. If you are interested in joining you don’t need any particular
experience, just a desire to help. Accommodation will be in a good hotel in
a resort community.
What is in it for you or your spouse?
• A shared experience with your child that will be truly memorable
• Knowledge that you are contributing to people’s lives
• A bonding experience with fellow WPOers/YPOers who may become friends for
life
What is in it for your child?
• A shared experience with you and other WPO/YPO youth
• The ability to make a difference at a young age
• Experiencing a different culture and understanding real poverty
• An opportunity to bring the experience back home and continue to make a
difference in his/her school or community
• A great college essay and/or community service experience
We encourage you to register soon as the trip is limited to 30 people.
To register, please contact Stephanie Sonnabend at
SSonnabend@sonesta.com.

Economic Development
Network - WPOers and YPOers Gather in Egham, England to Plan
Direction and Launch New Initiatives

WPO and YPO members
from as far away as India, El Salvador, Europe, the US and Canada met in
Egham, England from 3 to 5 March 2007, to connect, share personal
experiences, learn from each other and identify opportunities that will
‘move the needle’ and make a difference to third world development.
Highlights of the meeting included a dialogue with Percy Barnevik, founder
of Hand in Hand Organization. It looked at how business people can apply
their skills to solve the problems of underemployment and job creation,
based on the development methods employed by Hand in Hand in India. On the
second day the group heard from the UK and French country directors for
Ashoka, on the organization’s primary activities in identifying and
sponsoring ‘social entrepreneurs’, with further discussions on how YPO and
Ashoka may find synergy on mutually beneficial programs.
A newly created Reverse Trade Action Forum (RT-AF) was formed to explore
opportunities for YPOers to help facilitate opening markets for products
from the developing countries. RT-AF is chaired by Yann Borgstedt (YPO
Alpine & London) and Tom Kaneb (WPO Quebec). If you would like to get
involved, please contact them: Yann Borgstedt (y.borgstedt@pelichet.ch),
Tom Kaneb (tomk@sigmapoint.com).
The Economic
Development Network has capitalized on the power of successful entrepreneurs
helping would-be entrepreneurs. The 120-member group works largely through
Action Forums, which are sub-groups focused on specific issues. In addition
to the Reverse Trade Action Forum, current Forums include Microfinance and
Village Partnership. The Network also hosted several successful meetings,
on-site visits, and global conference calls, including a recent call with
Jeff Sachs on Eradicating Poverty.
The Economic Development Network membership has doubled in the last six
months. Members and spouses who are interested in getting involved, who are
involved and want to share, and those who just want to learn more are
welcome. For more information, please contact Frieder Krups (WPO
Denmark) at fkrups@bybcoaching.com.

Helping Disadvantaged Kids Network
to Meet 14-16 June 2007 in New York

The Helping Disadvantaged Kids
Network brings together WPO/YPO members and their spouses currently engaged
in leadership of organisations that serve disadvantaged kids. The aim is to
share best practices, to connect with each other, to increase skills and to
engage people seeking activity in helping kids with those who already are.
The Helping Disadvantaged Kids
Network will hold its first meeting in New York, 14 to 16 June 2007. The
event will be an important beginning in the Helping Disadvantaged Kids
movement. It will provide a unique opportunity for WPO/YPO members, alumni
and their spouses to learn from leaders facing children’s issues in both the
developing and developed worlds, as well as meeting other WPOers/YPOers with
a passion in this area.
Details of the program are currently being finalized. For more
information, contact Greg Garrett at
ggdirect@aol.com or

Environment Network Continues Momentum

The Environment Network continues to gain momentum
after signing up 150 new members at GLC bringing the total Environment
Network membership to over 200.
At GLC, fellow YPOers introduced The Cleantech Group
as a world-class organization which complements the Environment Network. The
Cleantech Group focuses on providing insight, opportunities and building
relationships that catalyze and accelerate the growth of Cleantech markets
globally.
The Network’s inaugural Global Conference Call, with Nicholas Parker on
April 4, 2007, gave an interesting ‘State of the Union’ update on the world
of Cleantech from the Co-founder and Chairman of the Cleantech Group.
The next event: Green Bucks: How to Make Money from the Emerging Trend
towards Sustainable and Environmentally Centric Business Models, 5 to 6 June
2007, Seattle, WA is a Pacific North West Chapter sponsored event that is
open to members of the Environment Network. Join Rud Browne (YPO Pacific
North West) and Robert Safrata (YPO British Columbia) to learn how to profit
from the emerging trend towards sustainable and environmentally centric
business models and ‘do good in the process’. For further information and
how to register, please contact Joan Carl, Chapter Administrator (joancarl@verizon.net).
